If you have ever worked in a crowded office then you are probably aware how hot and stuffy it can get, which will not only prevent you from doing your work properly, but it can also create a number of health issues for everyone there. Runny nose or cough are main indicators that you might be suffering from an allergy, and those that have similar issues know that there is hardly anything you can do to stop them. While some medicines are good at preventing harsh symptoms – those are only short term fixes. Office space comfort is important, and any business owner should try and remove any possible causes of discomfort among his or her employees. After all, people will spend there at least 8 hours a day, so it is best to start from the source: what can cause allergies?

Indoor Plants

indoor plants

If there are some houseplants in your office, they might be causing you discomfort. This is especially important if there are flowers. Truth be told, indoor plants do not usually cause problems simply because they do not have flowers, and hence do not pollinate as much as those found outside. Some of the common house plants can cause allergies but only if you come in contact with their sap, or if you touch them. But if you do feel like your eyes are full of tears, or you already suffer from asthma, it would be best if you removed those plants. It is best that workers explain their situation to their employer so that the plant can be removed or replaced with another which will cause no problems. Overall, plants are important not only because of their aesthetic value, but also because they can help maintain clear air inside your office.

Cigarettes

bad smoke

Smoking is banned from most public places and stores, and this ban is spreading during recent years, and even coffee shops and restaurants must create special sections for smokers and nonsmokers. This should also be done at your workplace. While smoking should be prohibited, sometimes, employers allow it only to please their workers, but this can cause troubles for others. The best solution is to totally ban it, but if that is not an option, or if your boss is a smoker too, then ask for windows to be open, or for special ventilation to be installed, which can purify air. Even the simplest respiratory problem can be worsened when you are surrounded with cigarette smoke. You should have smoke breaks, but only outdoors – on the patios and terraces, but no smoking inside.

Cleaning Chemicals

Cleaning Products

While it is important that the offices are thoroughly cleaned, sometimes even that can cause problems as some chemicals can cause allergies for the workers that are exposed to them. Most things people are allergic to are usually natural in origin, such as mold, pollen, dust, dander or foods, while artificially made chemicals are usually safe. But sometimes even they can cause problems for some people who have extremely sensitive skin. If you encounter that some of the cleaning products are simply too strong for you, approach your supervisors and alert them, as this can be a serious medical condition.

Mold

mold microscopic

Molds occur in nature – they decompose dead organisms and even some organic substances such as paper, fabrics and food, and while they are an essential part of nature, they are not a welcomed guest inside an office. Mold appears usually in hidden places, where water can condense, and that can in turn cause allergies in some people. Mold can appear everywhere from the ceiling, behind the desk, in your coffeemaker and even in the AC filters. A recommendation is that you simply let the air enter every room, so open the windows at least twice a day, and change filters in the AC or other kind of ventilation regularly. You should do your part, and clean after yourself, but also require of your employer to maintain all the equipment and not to allow mold to form, which can be a health risk not only for those that are allergic to it.

While the hardest part is discovering where the source of your allergies is, once you check everything we have mentioned above, you are surely to find it in no time.
