Just hours ago the wreckage of flight AirAsia QZ8501 was discovered off the Belitung Islands. I have added a passenger list at the end of this article.

Air Asia flight crashes in Java Sea AirAsia flight QZ 8501 from Indonesia to Singapore crashes Airbus 320 took off from Surabaya (Indonesia) at 5.20 am local time and was scheduled to land at Singapore’s Changi airport at 8.30 am.

An Indonesian transport official confirmed the plane was an Airbus 320-200 and that seven crew and 155 passengers were on board. Indonesian TV are reporting there were 149 Indonesians, three Koreans, one Singaporean, one Briton and one Malaysian on board.

The aircraft was an Airbus A320-200 with the registration number PK-AXC. At this time, search and rescue operations are in progress and AirAsia is cooperating fully and assisting the rescue service.

As you are about to see in the video below Dahboo7 has discovered a leaked screen shot of the location where the plane went down.

Right now the cause is suspected to be weather related.

I will be updating this post throughout the day as more information becomes available.

Over 40 bodies have been recovered from the missing AirAsia flight, the Indonesian Navy said. Objects resembling parts of the plane, as well as what was thought to be the plane’s outline underwater, were seen in the search area.

Indonesian TV showed two relatively large objects, one orange and one grey or brown, floating on the surface. The largest appeared to be several meters in length. Indonesian media reported an air force official sighting suspected bodies, life vest, luggage, and plane debris off the west coast of Kalimantan.

Indonesian officials coming off a helicopter in Pangkalan Bun say they spotted several bodies floating in waters near where the missing AirAsia flight was last seen.

The bodies were brought to an Indonesian navy ship.

“As we approached, the body seemed bloated,” said First Lieutenant Tri Wibowo, who was on board a Hercules during the search operation, was quoted by the Kompas.com website as saying.

The sighting of the bodies was not confirmed, but Indonesia’s Search and Rescue Agency chief said he is “95 percent sure” that the debris is from the missing aircraft.

An Airbus A320-200 carrying 162 people and operated by Indonesia AirAsia disappeared in poor weather on Sunday morning during a flight from the Indonesian city of Surabaya to Singapore.

“The debris is red and white,” Djoko Murjatmodjo, acting director general of air transportation at the transportation ministry, told reporters. “We are checking if it’s debris from the aircraft. It’s probably from the body of the aircraft.”

Based on the size and colouring of the debris, it was likely to be part of the missing jet, Murjatmodjo added.

An Indonesia senior aviation official said the debris spotted “can be confirmed” to be from the AirAsia jet.

“For the time being it can be confirmed that it’s the AirAsia plane and the transport minister will depart soon to Pangkalan Bun,” Djoko Murjatmodjo, Indonesia’s director general of civil aviation, told AFP.

Tony Fernandes, global CEO of AirAsia, tweeted that he is heading to Surbaya.
