Landmark Decision

The Supreme Court’s decision on the landmark District of Columbia v. Heller case helped redefine intent and interpretation of 2nd Amendment rights. On June 26, 2008 the Supreme Court determined: the District’s ban on handgun possession in the home violates the Second Amendment, as does its prohibition against rendering any lawful firearm in the home operable for the purpose of immediate self-defense. Two main clauses are first the prefatory clause: A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State… followed by the operative clause: …the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.1

Regulated Militia

If the intent is a well regulated militia, why does the anti-gun lobby push to demilitarize it? When legislators draft laws which remove the right to bear arms from able-bodied males who could effectively be conscripted. If China and Russian invaded the Pacific coast, the American government would not hesitate to draft citizens into military service. Emphasizing the importance of a citizen’s collective right.

Home Defense

Regarding the individual right, what kind of political intent would prohibit a citizen from keeping a firearm in their home for immediate self-defense? In a city with a high crime rate, and a busy black market which continues to put guns in the hands of thugs. Emasculating home defense would put thousands of homes at risk. And where would the nearest armed police officer be while the front door was kicked in? Immediacy of self-defense is critical in certain situations.

Against Tyranny

Finally, there is the aspect of tyranny. Every citizen should retain the right to both individually and collectively protect against a despotic regime. Including the ability to potentially help prevent a dictatorship. How many times has Hollywood reminded citizens through imagery of destroyed dystopic cities? Movie viewers must overcome their conditioning. Instead of subconsciously accepting potential social and economic collapse, American citizens must consciously take steps to prevent it.
