The Left is screaming this week about Trump’s proposed Budget that doesn’t raise the deficit. You know that pesky little $70 trillion dollar problem looming out there for 330 million Americans? NPR and its  Global Warming Pravda propaganda might be cut. Oh my.  Sesame Street won’t be federally funded? and The Children won’t learn to count or spell. Ever again.  Where does all that money earned from licensed Sesame Street toys sold by the millions at Walmart and Toys R Us go? Cookie Monster and Bert and Ernie? Kermit and Miss Piggy?  Who gets those ROYALTIES? That would pay for Sesame Street so the tax payer doesn’t have to. Right?

Yesterday the #Resist screamers attacked the proposed budget cuts for Meals on Wheels- another government entitlement that is a bloated bureaucracy instead of a volunteer organization funded by churches and other civic organizations as it should be and once was before it became a taxpayer funded operation full of graft. PEOPLE WILL STARVE the left tells us.
A few years ago my husband ran into his friend who volunteers  as a Meals on Wheels driver delivering meals to shut ins, mainly the elderly,  in our  rural county adjacent to Richmond.  My husband’s friend told him he was now delivering meals to our elderly neighbor who lives across the street from us. His eyebrows “raised” as he unloaded his story on my husband.
I live in a very upscale neighborhood and my husband could tell this guy was incredulous that  people could rip off Meals on Wheels. Why was he as a retired  volunteer living on a modest pension using his own car and gas and donating his time  delivering meals to an elderly man in “our” neighborhood.  He wanted to know who these people were who signed up  Dad for a free meal.
My neighbors at the time lived across the street from us in a $1.6 million dollar brand new 13,000 square foot brick home with 6 garages. Yes,  you read that correctly – 6 garages. It is three stories with an elevator in it so they didn’t have to walk from the third floor to the first floor.  Two lawyers owned it- a man and wife both attorneys and his parents. The mother passed away shortly after they purchased the home with an entire first floor dedicated to the parents.
This home was their primary residence although they owned two additional rental properties in the greater Richmond area. And they kept a really nice boat at Lake Anna for their weekend recreational use. How wonderful for them.
Which brings me back to why a Volunteer Meals on Wheels driver was delivering a free hot meal to the “millionaires next door.”
The owner’s father and Meals recipient, also a retired lawyer, was 90 years old and lived in the “mother in law suite” in the mansion. That suite is located on the first floor- had a full kitchen, bath, and bedrooms for the father- in- law to live in. All that was required of the two adult lawyers to feed dad was to take the elevator down to the first floor, reheat a frozen dinner from the en suite freezer, microwave it and serve it if only they could be bothered. But no- let’s have Meals on Wheels take care of dad two floors below. After all- it’s FREE. The taxpayers fund this free service. TRUE STORY.
As if that isn’t enough insanity here’s more fodder.  My garden club meets at a local Richmond church each month (which we pay for with our dues)  and in the month of February a SALARIED Meals on Wheels director comes from Richmond and our club uses our resources to make flower arrangements to put on the trays for the Meals on Wheels “clients” that week. She collects the finished flower arrangements and takes them back to the facility for placement on the trays. For this she is PAID. With tax payer dollars.
During her “two hour” salaried  visit for which she is “paid” to “sell the Meals on Wheels propaganda” to the Garden Club ladies creating flower arrangements for the Meals on Wheels “Clients” she slipped up and told us that they deliver PET FOOD to their  “Clients” as well.
I interrupted her and said “Would you repeat that?” Did you say you deliver PET FOOD to the Meals on Wheels clients? “Yes” she replied. “I thought I heard you say that” I replied.
What are the people who can’t “afford to eat” doing owning pets?  I asked.
…and then she launched into this entire lecture to me about how they needed the companionship of their pets and Meals on Wheels found that the poor people were going without food in order to feed their pets so they made the decision to deliver Pet Food to them to feed their PETS so they wouldn’t give them their own food instead.
As a lifelong dog and cat owner, I can attest that owning pets costs thousands of dollars annually.  If you are so poor you need hot meals delivered then YOU CAN”T AFFORD A PET. In my humble opinion. Just like you can’t afford to smoke cigarettes either at $300 per month or drink BEER or SODA. Or pay for CABLE TV or buy Lottery Tickets or have your gel nails done every two weeks.
Or carry a Coach or Kate Spade handbag.
